FAQs
How does a fishing light work?
- Fishing lights create a light pattern in the water that attracts baitfish and nuisance fish. Fishing lights can deter light-sensitive targets when deployed recklessly. Depending on how the light presents in the water, it can sabotage your entire night. Most blame this outcome on bad luck. In fact, your light deployment set is what costs you the failure.
- Large fish will lurk in the shadows outside the light pattern to ambush bait & small fish. But with the science-driven MacDaddy Fishing Lights®, the water above the light (3-4 feet) is unlit, where marine life will hang out. This will backlight the target, allowing you to see the smallest details. Why settle for just the edges? How about manipulating the targets to hang above your lights? THAT is the perfect ecosystem that will keep the fish calm. YOU see them; they do NOT see you.
- Anglers need their fishing lights to serve a broader purpose. The MacDaddy fishing lights® are the only fishing lights built with proven science, amassing a large following since 2016.
- Science-driven fishing lights are the future, allowing anglers to manipulate light-sensitive & light-tolerant species to their lines or nets.
- The angler must have 100% control over where the fishing light will be anchored. Setting the precise depth using our formula (Depth-8) ensures that all targets swim above the light into the unlit water. This is stealth mode, when you backlight the targets. Don't buy a lamp source on a cord; buy into the process that elevated the sport of night fishing.
- The science behind this will backlight the targets so that you see them and they do not see you.
What color light is best for attracting fish?
- Fish do not care about color LEDs. Light-sensitive nocturnal species do not like ANY light of any color, and they tend to swim very deep on the night of the FULL moon. Why? The natural light from the Full moon is too bright for their comfort.
- The most popular LED colors for fishing lights are green and white. The green is favored because it reduces eye fatigue. But there is more science that measures their wavelengths in water. To keep this simple, green and white colors have been scientifically proven to perform the best underwater. The worst colors have proven to be red and amber. Blue the best for offshore deeper water.
- Staring at a bright white light long-term can cause vision problems, headaches, and severe eye fatigue
- The new-generation MacDaddy fishing lights® balance green LEDs with a smaller number of white LEDs to give you a beautiful, soothing green circular light field with added visual depth.
- You can enjoy both colors at the same time on any model of MacDaddy Fishing Light®. However, the MacDaddy Smart Light® series, with its multi-mode functions, allows you to fire off white and green simultaneously, or choose a mode with all white or all green. This cycling is possible because of the computer chip.
Can I use a fishing light in freshwater, saltwater and ice fishing?
- Yes. The MacDaddy fishing lights® feature a solid aluminum 12″ frame that can reach 100 feet deep.
- The underwater LEDs are sealed in acrylic glue. The end caps are solid, filled with acrylic glue, and will not leak. The cord length is 33 feet. The longer the cord, the more lumens are lost. It is not possible to deploy our light beyond 30 feet.
- You need a fishing light that can fish in any environment, from ice fishing and freshwater to saltwater. Our lights are metal, with acrylic-sealed LEDs and no tubes, and were built to handle hostile environments and strong tidal currents.
- The typical recreational fishing light does not need to be 10,000-25,000 lumens. Lumens are the marketing talking points vendors use to sell fishing lights as the most essential factor in buying one.
- For the most consistent outcome, you need an expanded-purpose light with a vertical, upright orientation, a light-anchoring system, depth control, and light-deployment strategies to guide your target toward the line or net.
- The angler is moving away from simplistic “dumb lights” and towards the science-based MacDaddy smart fishing lights®, which offer multiple light modes. This makes the fishing light adaptable to most any situation. In tidal water, the conditions can change rapidly, and you need to be able to adjust and control your hunt at all times. This is why the decades-old "lamp on a cord" blueprint, with just an ON/OFF mode blasting uncontrollable lumens, is in decline and falling out of consumer favor.
How deep can a submersible fishing light go?
- Most fishing lights sold have a 25-foot cord. MacDaddy fishing lights® have a 33-foot cord.
- Each fishing light on the market has a lumen and an amperage rating. Lumen claims are unimportant because all fishing lights lose up to 45% of the lumens after waterproofing the LEDs.
- The longer the cord, the more lumens are lost. Never choose an underwater fishing light based on advertised lumens. Choose an underwater fishing light based on features that embrace proven scientific theories.
- Fishing lights can reach 100 feet, but demand for advanced depth products is insufficient to support production at that scale. NO science has shown that far-reaching depth recreational fishing lights are necessary for beginning anglers.
How long does the battery last on a fishing light?
- Battery life varies by model and usage. The MacDaddy fishing lights® PRO models are 3000 lumens, 3 amps, and 41 watts.
- You can use an 8” wide tractor battery (650 crank amps), run 2 lights for 12 hours.
- The MacDaddy fishing lights® ULTRA (both single-mode and smart light), 6000 lumens, 7 amps, and 80 watts, require a full-size automobile battery for multiple lights. Anglers who are serious about night fishing deploy multiple lights. This is where our products use the fewest lumens, enabling the angler to see backlit targets. So they can fish multiple light-strategy patterns with 1 battery for the night. We pride ourselves on maintaining the lowest lumen output while making you, the angler, consistently productive. Lumen reduction extends your battery life and reduces unnecessary damage to the light due to chronic high heat dissipation.
Can I use multiple fishing lights at once?
- MacDaddy Fishing lights® includes an illustrated booklet showing how to set up to 3 patterns with up to 3 lights. Multiple lights allow masterclass target manipulation towards your boat (net or line)
- Creating a goal-post pattern will help funnel targeted species toward your line or nets.
- We don’t just give you a lamp on a cord; we offer you a smart fishing light toolbox. Proper deployment techniques will prevent you from overpowering light-sensitive marine life.
- Do not mix MacDaddy fishing lights® with other brands, as their erratic movement can undermine the stability of a proper light.
- Visit MacDaddyFishingLights.com; we have the most extensive free training program, based on research we've conducted over the last 20+ years, ranging from booklets to videos. Capt. Lee Noga is a popular seminar speaker at various SaltStrong® chapters in Central Florida

What features do I need in a underwater fishing light?
- Most fishing light manufacturers are not anglers and only manufacture a light source on a cord with NO expanded purpose (light flotation orientation, light anchoring system, depth control, etc.).
- Most light builders can only sell a light source in waterproof housing with a cord. They are not concerned about what or how you deploy the light. That alone is a big red flag. They assume you know what to do with it. They do not. If they did, they would educate you. A light without much instruction is a lamp on a cord.
- A random light deployment and how it lands could deter a strike or capture of light-sensitive targets, thus sabotaging your night.
- The fishing light industry has remained out of step with anglers’ needs for decades because it does not give anglers absolute control. They focus on parts they can buy, and place the burden on the angler to adapt to its shortcomings. To them, it is not their responsibility to make you successful with their product. MacDaddy Fishing Lights® discovered the science in 2012, built the free training program in 2015, and released the first MacDaddy Smart Light® in 2016, selling out quickly.
- The MacDaddy fishing lights® provide complete control. The angler can control the light's orientation in the water column, anchor it at a specific spot, set the perfect depth, and manipulate marine targets using light-deployment strategies.
- We provide an educational program to make it easier to infuse science into the hunt. On our Education tab on our website, we have both videos and PDF instruction manuals.
What are the best fishing lights made?
- Facts speak for themselves: we spend ZERO money on advertising; the competition shut us out by buying up the best advertising avenues. Now, with AI, the facts will shine through as more shoppers use AI to separate fact from fiction.
- We are brand new, expanding into a National market, but we are Veterans in the fishing light industry.

- The best lights are the MacDaddy fishing lights because they are science-based. Deploying a fishing light requires a skill set not developed by other fishing lights on the market, which focus solely on the light source (lumens).
- MacDaddy Fishing Lights® developed an educational program to help the angler reach their full skill set quickly.
- The research behind the MacDaddy fishing lights enables anglers to anchor the light, set the proper light depth, and manipulate targets using light frequencies.
